About the Class

Illustrative Mathematics (IM) Math 1 is an integrated high school mathematics course that combines concepts from algebra, geometry, and statistics into a cohesive learning experience. Throughout the course, students explore linear and exponential relationships, solve systems of equations, analyze and interpret data, and develop geometric reasoning through transformations and coordinate geometry. The curriculum emphasizes problem-solving, mathematical discourse, real-world applications, and conceptual understanding, encouraging students to explain their thinking and make connections across mathematical topics. By the end of the course, students are able to model and analyze relationships, solve complex problems, and apply mathematical reasoning to a variety of contexts.

Constructions and Rigid Transformations

This unit introduces students to the foundations of geometry through constructions and rigid transformations. Students explore geometric properties without relying on measurements, using constructions to develop conjectures, justify reasoning, and deepen their understanding of shapes and relationships in the plane. Building on their prior experiences with transformations, students learn to create and analyze rotations, reflections, and translations using geometric tools rather than coordinate grids, leading to more formal and rigorous definitions. Throughout the unit, students develop mathematical argumentation skills, use a geometry reference chart to support formal reasoning, and select appropriate tools, including traditional geometry instruments and dynamic geometry software, to investigate and communicate mathematical ideas.
